TSC program

Program overview

Our TSC program is unique in that it identifies the 8 most essential components of public speaking for teens in order to individually target and improve those skills. Each of these components is divided into a module which is accompanied by a lesson with the student as well as worksheets and exercises to reinforce and practice those skills. Each mentor will have a handbook to guide them through the lessons and different modules.

Module 1: Speed

Module 1 focuses on speed and the rate at which the student is speaking for their speech. For most teens, speaking slower than normal when public speaking is very challenging. Our program utilizes a metric known as WPM “words per minute” to help our students achieve the desired speaking rate in front of an audience.

Module 2: PLB

Module 2 is known as PLB (Pause, look up and breathe) which teaches students to pause between sentences and paragraphs to take a breath and connect with their audience by looking up. This skill is imperative for young teens especially as it forces them to slow down and be more grounded as they speak.

Module 3: Emphasis

Module 3 targets emphasis and helps students learn to add vocal variety when speaking publicly. Emphasis is essential to convert your desired meaning to your audience. This module includes various exercises and drills to teach how to emphasize and when in your speech it’s a good idea to do so.

Module 4: Expression

Module 4 teaches expression to students. Expression allows speakers to communicate their emotions better with their audience and as a result capture and engage their audience better.

Module 5: Confidence

Module 5 works on student’s confidence while speaking. This is typically one of the hardest battles for teens when it comes to public speaking. This module will allow the student and mentor to work together on building confidence through following our TSC confidence building schedule filled with activities based on how far away the speech is.

Module 6: Voice

The voice module targets volume and enunciation in particular. This works on students speaking loudly and clearly while presenting. Voice is an essential module since without it your audience is unable to understand what you’re saying and your presentation becomes pointless. Our voice module features fun tongue twisters to target enunciation as well as a decibel meter to measure students’ volume!

Module 7: Body Language

Module 7 works on body language while speaking which is imperative for any good speech or presentation. The way one carries their body while speaking majorly impacts the way that they speak in many regards! This module includes our fun TSC acronym for body language as well as more helpful body language tips and tricks!

Module 8: Repetition

The final module is repetition which is needed to master any of the 7 skills. This module contains exercises and ways to prepare for your speech. It’s organized as a convenient calendar checklist for students to follow to make sure they’re repeating exercises and practicing as frequently as needed.
